Overview of Idea

The Pets in the Classroom Grant program provides teachers with funds to help purchase and maintain a classroom pet for the purpose of helping students gain a greater understanding of the natural world and responsible pet ownership.

The Specifics: What will the $2,000 fund?

The Pets in the Classroom Grant program was established by the Pet Care Trust in 2009 because many school teachers have very limited resources for the support of classroom animals. The grant program has helped over 8,000 teachers support pets in the classroom through direct, no-hassle educational grants, and the Trust is looking for help to financially support more teachers. The money from the GOOD Maker Earth Day Challenge would provide an additional 20 grants to teachers, allowing approximately 600 students to be positively influenced through the human-animal bond and the numerous benefits that come from learning about responsible pet care.

This is a great program! I recently received this grant and my children were very excited about us having a pet in our classroom. We recently purchased two dwarf hamsters, "Sugar" and "Spice". We really enjoy watching and taking care of our pets. Thanks so much to Pets in the Classroom.

I was the lucky recipient of a no cost cage for a hamster this year. Although I had the cost of the food and bedding, I was lucky enough to get the cage, wheel and water bottle t no cost. I hope I will be lucky enough to get a grant for the supplies to keep her next year. My students love her and most have their parents come in to look at her at pick up time. They save fruit and veggies for her to eat and enjoy watching her and caring for her. She has taught them about responsibility and living things. I am thrilled to have been awarded the gift. Thank you and I hope the program is able to continue and grow to provide other teachers the ability to provide this enrichment to their classroom. It certainly is hard to supply the classroom with all the projects a teacher wishes to provide for the students. providing pets in the classroom is one less expense for the dedicated teacher. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I have been the lucky recipient of Pet Care Trust grants for 2 years now ($50 and $25) I very much appreciate that this money is spent on our school's Bearded Dragon's food from a wonderful local pet shop. I still spend some of my own money on caring for her, but the no-hassle funding really helps. Thanks Pet Care!
