Overview of Idea

Each lunch period, cafeteria staff use 300 gallons of water to rinse leftover food from plates. Instead of placing dishes directly on the conveyer belt without removing food waste, the Right Angle intuitively informs patrons to first scrape-off their leftovers, significantly reducing water waste.

The Specifics: What will the $2,000 fund?

This concept has been prototyped and tested but it’s in need of a kick-start to develop it further. In a 1-day testing period, we reduced the target water use by 41.52% per capita. At Northwestern alone, that is a 1/4 of a million gallons of water saved annually (projected).

The funds from this contest would allow a team of students to manufacture, implement, and transmit our design. Our goal is to save millions of gallons wasted unnecessarily by making our solution viable for every facility that uses a conveyor belt dish system across the country.

These are exactly the kind of solutions the world needs to think of. Simple solutions that are cheap to install or retrofit and are intuitive for people to use. My only gripe is that your statistic has too many significant figures!

I hope our extra decimal places won't deter your support :) We'll make sure to be more mindful of statistical outputs in the future! Thank you for the kind words!

This is so much more practical than the Peace Orchard. Not only could it revolutionize Northwestern's dining system, but it could minimize water waste across America. This project really has potential to promote environmental stewardship both in and beyond the local community.

Thanks for the support! Promoting environmental stewardship is really at the root of many of the great projects entered in this contest, including the Peace Orchard, and I think where we differ is our focus. As a gardner and fresh-foodie, though, I think they're onto something too!

Great idea. Would an even better modification be to have fixed trays on the system for plates and glassware and have no lunch trays at all?

Thanks for the insight! We agree! The image above was created to juxtapose the problem with the solution but in reality the racks are machined to fit directly on to the system. You can see them in action here: http://designforamerica.com/projects/right-angle/

This is such a great and simple idea! Could really save a ton of water. How do you plan to make relationships with cafeterias throughout the country to implement? Is the current design the one you would implement or will you be making further iterations?

Thanks for the questions! Testing shows our design works with multiple systems but we will need to make minor iterations to our design to make it applicable in all contexts. Our big-picture goal is design a solution applicable in more conveyor systems so that we can make a widespread impact. In the short term, we will be working to implement locally and start saving water as soon as possible! We would use our local wins to motivate change on a larger scale, starting by reaching out to more sites in our local area as well as students at other universities and moving out from there!

An incredible project. I had a chance to see it in action, and have heard first hand how it could be effective in dining halls across the country (be it college, hospital, or military dining!) A simple, scalable solution that effectively reduces fresh water waste that is currently built into the conveyor belt system. ROCK ON!
