This concept has been prototyped and tested but it's in need of a kick-start to develop it further. In a 1-day testing period, we reduced the target water use by 41.52% per capita. At Northwestern alone, that is a 1/4 of a million gallons of water saved annually (projected). The funds from this contest would allow a team of students to manufacture, implement, and transmit our design. Our goal is to save millions of gallons wasted unnecessarily by making our solution viable for every facility that uses a conveyor belt dish system across the country.

Communities in Banjarmasin battle with flooding, polluted waters, and rising tides, especially in dense informal settlements on the riverfront. The funding will buy materials to support a campaign and workshops to increase awareness of water issues and a construction process to create the infrastructure. We will work with waterfront communities to design and build low-cost urban water infrastructure. These improvements will reduce water-related vulnerability and create positive impacts on the river ecology, improve the public realm, and reposition the river as a local asset. Solo Kota Kita is a non-profit organization that creates development and design projects. Our approach is highly inclusive of the communities where we work.

The Pets in the Classroom Grant program was established by the Pet Care Trust in 2009 because many school teachers have very limited resources for the support of classroom animals. The grant program has helped over 8,000 teachers support pets in the classroom through direct, no-hassle educational grants, and the Trust is looking for help to financially support more teachers. The money from the GOOD Maker Earth Day Challenge would provide an additional 20 grants to teachers, allowing approximately 600 students to be positively influenced through the human-animal bond and the numerous benefits that come from learning about responsible pet care.

The funds will go directly towards educational materials on composting and aquaponics for the young men at Harambee Youth Kenya (HYK). We will build a composting site and will install an aquaponics system at HYK to supplement the boys' education with firsthand experience in sustainable agriculture. Our long term goal is for the boys to host fee-based educational workshops for community members. This will provide a for-profit venture for the HYK community to own and operate, and will serve to aid in the development of the Dagoretti community by disseminating sustainable initiatives.

The $2,000 Fund will specifically fund Cloud 9 Rooftop Farm's education program needs. Cloud 9 will run lessons and workshops for school groups, universities, and community members. Cloud 9 will begin during the late spring of 2012 and grow in a 6,000 square ft. demonstration garden. During our first season we will show different rooftop farming methods, vertical growing techniques, as well as storm water mitigation methods. We will need many supplies such as tools, soil, seeds, seed pots, cooking supplies, amongst other things to teach inspiring programs. By 2015 we will grow to a full production and educational site (1.5 acres) and with the help of the $2,000 Fund we will already have our educational programs running strong.

To best explain Aquaponics I'll need to build systems to demonstrate. I plan to use recycled materials for building the fish tanks and grow beds. I will need pumps, hoses, and grow medium. If enough is left over I'd like to make the pumps solar powered with a battery back-up. With a working model I hope to inspire people to help this project further with donations and volunteer work. With the seed money of $2000 there's a great potential for a lot of growth in the sustainability movement. This project will help people see that technology and nature can work in harmony, grow food in a way that doesn't harm the environment, eat a rich and healthy diet, and stimulate the local food economy.

The vision of the Bee Tree Project is a collaboration between the Bee Girl organization, the Coyote Trails’ Jefferson Nature Center, and the Ashland cohort of the Ford Institute Leadership Program to demonstrate through display and interpretation, a garden which exemplifies pollinator habitat and incorporates permaculture standards. The project provides a safe and educational experience for all ages that demonstrates to the public replicable options to enhance the biodiversity of our region and sustainability of our agricultural systems and our pollinators. The $2,000 will be met with matching funds from the Ford Family Foundation to build this garden, interpretive signage, and install honey bee hives and native pollinator homes.

Since 1995, FSD has been a leader in global development by implementing community-driven projects that have lasting effects. We would like to build on past success we've had with vegetable gardens in a country with one of the highest rates of malnutrition in Latin America. These funds will go towards the purchase of necessary tools and materials for the creation of the garden, including a fence, pick-ax, shovels, seeds, and compost. While providing children with awareness about nutrition and environment early on can shape their attitudes and will have lasting effects in the future, the vegetable gardens will also be used as an on-site guide to include environmental education in the children’s school day.

A $2,000 grant from GOOD will provide funds to purchase seeds, hanging baskets, soil and materials for trellises and raised beds for the SEEDS OF LEARNING Kitchen Garden Project. During 2012, an estimated 225 students (5th - 9th grade) will construct, plant and maintain the hoop house, sharing a bounty of vegetables, herbs and other fresh produce with the approximately 9,000 children who come each year to participate in our residential, day and summer camp environmental education programs.

The Tree Pittsburgh Tree Nursery grows trees from seeds collected locally, and provides genetically diverse planting stock for Tree Pittsburgh’s restoration projects. Seedlings in Schools will encourage the collection, planting, and nurturing of seeds into young trees by elementary school students while bolstering Tree Pittsburgh’s nursery supply, and bringing hands-on learning into classrooms. Students will gain an awareness of the importance of trees in an urban environment and how they grow. Emphasis is placed on biodiversity in the urban forest & growing a variety of tree species while many trees are threatened by diseases and invasive insects.

Through signage, an accurate and interactive online map, and diligent hands-on advocacy, we have seen results. Four projects have started in the last 8 months on vacant land that used to sit behind fences. We know our tactics work and we want to keep going -- to keep being able to respond to questions from neighbors working with their communities, to keep our map up-to-date as city real estate holdings change and to continue producing educational materials to explain the process of getting community control of municipal land in terms that make it seem approachable. $2,000 will let us do that by providing a stipend over the next six months to our lead facilitator and allowing us to hire data experts when we need to.

Our cats become very agitated when wheelchairs or other assisting devices are present. Also, a lot of the elderly or people with disabilities are not able to walk on their own around the large facility. The use of a golf cart would provide a safe vehicle for these visitors to tour the center without causing the cats any stress. We would not have to deny these visitors the pleasure of being up close and personal with some of the most amazing animals on the planet. They could hear all about our cats and conservation and welfare efforts while gazing into the eyes of a tiger, lion, leopard or mountain lion.

We will use this grant to plan, promote, produce a large BFB benefit concert in Fort Collins this Fall. Our team has a great deal of festival planning experience and many contacts in the Colorado music scene. BFB can get several Colorado bands to play this event for free or cheap, keeping our expenses to a minimum. Our goal is to raise $10,000 through ticket sales and donations in the beer garden, where sponsors are already in place. The proceeds from this event will be used to build our fleet, which currently consists of one converted airport shuttle. BFB is also working with other donors that will help build our fleet in the future. With help from the Earth Day Challenge, BFB can achieve these goals and much more over the years to come.

As a part of this year's Design Biennale in Venice Italy, Greenaid has been invited to install several seedbomb vending machines across the city. Our plan is to develop a semi-aquatic seedbomb mix (targeting the threatened salt marshes of the Venice lagoon with native vegetation) and give the 200,000 visitors to the show a chance to give back to the local ecology. Our goal is to organize a series of public workshops and events that will allow local residents and visitors to both make and distribute seedbombs. In order to do this we need some additional funding to cover the additional costs of materials, and local promotion. With your help, we could turn this temporary installation into a lasting feature of Venice for years to come!
